Dear Delegates,

Treatment guidelines are evidence-based recommendations for the assessment and treatment of disorders. Their primary intention is to assist physicians in clinical decision making in a standardized format. They are generally arrived at through workshops by elaborate review of the evidence and arriving at consensus. The Indian Psychiatric Society through its Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) Taskforce has been striving since 2005 by making available CPGs for various psychiatric disorders that are serving as ready reckoners for practitioners.

However, several recent developments in the field of mental health (Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 and its extant rules and regulations, the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the Mental Health Review Boards etc. have brought back the spotlight once again on CPGs. There is a perception that clinical encounters are getting litigious, and clinical decision making is increasingly getting scrutinized for 100% compliance with the CPGs, without taking into consideration the spirit behind those treatment recommendations. What is written there becomes the gospel truth and many a times, the interpretation of the guidelines has potential to against the decision made by the practitioners.

In the above context, there is a felt need among the practitioners to regroup and review the guidelines, to suggest edits, modifications. This symposium/CME is aimed at doing exactly that keeping in mind the 4 most common disorders encountered by psychiatrists: Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive and related disorders and Alcohol Use Disorders. Eminent academicians and practitioners will come together to deliberate, discuss and suggest recommendations for future versions of CPGs.
